Define
Celibacy
As
commonly understood Celibacy primarily neither relates to remaining unmarried
nor it has anything to do with sexual abstinence alone. Celibacy primarily is
practicing purity in a sexual relationship. Absolute practitioners of celibacy
may also remain bachelors (unmarried) in life. But remaining unmarried is not
the prime requirement of celibacy. Celibacy
is a term that has been coined absolutely in relationship to spirituality. Only
those who desire to proceed on the path of pure spirituality
need practice celibacy. Those leading the life of a householder need not practice
celibacy at all. Practice
of celibacy is always voluntary. Those who advocate practice of involuntary celibacy
have not clearly understood the meaning of celibacy. The Definition celibacy best
defined in hinduism is, "trying to attain absolute purity of thought while
dwelling in the domain of the spirituality all the while keeping sexual indulgence
under absolute wraps". Celibacy
in other terms is to be practiced more mentally than physically. Mental celibacy
means keeping sensual inclinations under wraps by the simple phenomenon of praying
to God with the omen that every woman in the world is a mother, sister or daughter
to us. We can never have any other relationship with a woman if we desire to practice
absolute celibacy. Those
already married and desirous of proceeding on the path of pure spirituality have
a decision to make... apart from their married partner they shall not have any
sensual tendencies towards a female other than as expressed above. As time passes
by... this married woman would also come to be treated like a sister as
happened in the case of Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa. The
world knows that Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa treated his wife as direct representative
of Mother Earth and treated her almost like a goddess. Many a times he prayed
to the mother (his wife) for gracing the humanity with her powers that be.
Lord Krishna never considered Radha as his wife. She was just a consort
for him for his indulgence lay elsewhere. Lord Krishna was all the time involved
in assignments that befitted the Avatar
of that era. He was a human being with supernatural powers. Celibacy
does not mean abstinence from sexual act alone. Why? Sexual abstinence by force
or involuntarily may lead to practice of homosexuality and masturbation.
Both the acts in principle do not lead one towards the desired goal of spirituality.
Celibacy has to be
practiced in absolute terms. The best practitioners of celibacy even while living
in Grihastha Ashram (the life of a householder) makes sure that the sexual involvement
between the husband and wife is limited to not more than two times a month.
We have to preserve the power
of semen (in case of man)! The monthly quota of cosmic energy provided to every
man is required to be preserved for a period of 12 years in continuation. This
is possible only by practicing celibacy voluntarily as it was meant to be.
We
just cannot while away the most potent source of energy if we are to become a
Mahavira,
Gautama Buddha, Jesus
Christ or Prophet
Mohammed in the present life.
It is only traveling on the waves of celibacy that one reaches the level of Nirvikalpa
Samadhi. The awakening of Kundalini can only happen if we have celibacy
under absolute control. The awakening of the Kundalini
is beset with practicing absolute celibacy for a continuous period of 12 years.
Mahavira practiced celibacy
for a continuous period of 12 years. Gautama Buddha followed and absolute celibacy
was also practiced by Jesus Christ and Prophet Mohammed for reaching the status
they finally achieved in life... becoming an enlightened one!
The practice of absolute celibacy directly leads towards gaining enlightenment
within this life. Brahmacharya
Vrata does not
mean sexual inactivity. It must be practiced mentally to gain purity of thought
so that absolute control over the five senses and the mind can be established
with shall lead one towards attaining the stage of Nirvikalpa Samadhi. Books on Celibacy
